Happy Mother’s Day, everyone! We here at Mana that’s Good love and/or respect our moms, and in their honor I decided to do an extra special theme for my first top list on this blog: The top 5 Moms of Magic!
To do this, I went and searched for cards with the word “Mother” in their title. I am being as literal as possible here, so no Silver Queens or anything of that ilk. Only the bona-fide moms of Magic, ranked not really by how good of a card they are, but how good of a mother they are to their respective children.
So let’s get started with a pair of honorable mentions, shall we?
Honorable Mention 2:
It… it has the word “mother” in the title, right? And we know how some moms tend to do this on occasion… yeaaah… next.
(Ooo! I may put this in a Tiny Leaders deck!)
Honorable Mention 1
By far, one of my personal favorite MTG moms. The Mother of Goons has to be the “tough love” sort that raises her kids to grow up in an unfair and unforgiving world. And I have a lot of respect for that. Raising kids can be tough enough. However, insulting others is extremely rude, and insisting that they do it or she leaves, well, I’m not sure that’s very good parenting. But to each their own, and if her method works without directly doing any harm or anything illegal, then so be it.
Number 5
This mother, however, is kind of a terrible mom. Vatmother is one of those crazy moms you see on the news after they found out she murdered her children and was hiding them in the freezer. And when neighbors asked where the kids are, she would say that they were “off visiting grandma”... for three weeks straight. I would personally be terrified to have a mother like Phyrexian Vatmother.
Number 4
Back when I worked in Daycare, I saw the kind of mom I pictured Dragon Broodmother to be a LOT. Her children are little ANGELS WHO CAN NEVER DO ANYTHING WRONG. Let them out on the playground, and they start devouring other children. When the other parents confront her, she would get huffy. “Well, they shouldn’t have been so tasty looking then” would be what she would say to them. But she does love her kids and wants the best for them… at the cost of everyone else.
Number 3
Sakiko reminds me of that one news story I read about the Chinese billionaire that made his two children take summer jobs so that they wouldn’t turn into trust fund babies that had everything handed to them. I think that is her parenting style as well. She provides, but only if you show you are worthy. No work, no mana. I hold a ton of respect for parents like this, but sometimes they can be a bit harsh. The true Tiger Mother of the Multiverse. Even though she is actually a snake mother.
Number 2
Wort the Raidmother is almost the opposite of Sakiko. The down-home stay-at-home mom who treats cuponing not just as a way to save money, but a lifestyle. Yeah, she's a TLC Honey Boo-Boo kind of mother, and I must say, the resemblance is striking, is it not?
All jokes aside, this is a mom that really cares for her tons and tons of children. And you can see it. She does whatever is in her power to get what her little goblinbabies need to survive in a world that is pretty prejudiced towards goblins.
Number 1
The best mom in all of magic, as well as the most iconic mom in all of Magic, Mother of Runes takes the top spot. She is all about making sure her children are safe. From everything.
Bullies?
NOT ON HER WATCH.
Other adults?
YOU DEAL WITH ME, NOT MY KID.
Natural disasters?
THAT STORM CAN TURN THE OTHER WAY. MY BABY'S BIRTHDAY PARTY IS TODAY AND IT IS GOING TO BE PERFECT.
Otherworldly horrors?
I DON'T CARE HOW OLD OF A GOD YOU ARE. YOU ARE SCARING MY KIDS AND SHOULD DO YOUR SACRIFICIAL RITUALS ELSEWHERE.
She scares away the bad things and assures you that everything is going to be alright.

After all, isn't that what a mom's supposed to do? When it all comes down to it, moms are there to make everything better. They celebrate when you are doing well, and comfort and support you when things aren't going your way. And from all of us here to all of the mothers of Planeswalkers or Planeswalker mothers, happy mother's day.
