Kinny's Cube Draft 5/16/15

So the first ever official cube draft happened yesterday. It was a very exciting day that I have been planning for weeks. If it was a hit it will be the first of many drafts in the near future. Everyone arrived and we got to drafting.

Six people entered. I have been working on this cube to make it a great, if not a perfect(as much as I can of course) drafting experience. I have what most would call a Large cube, so in order for as many cards to be seen as possible I set the draft to 20 cards per pack for 6 people. That allows for the same number of cards to be seen as in an 8 person draft. After welcoming my guests we all sat down at 6 pm and opened the first pack. The players, Kinny, Newton, Tea, Drew, Del, and Cal.

Kinny: Built an Izzet control, with a slight artifact manipulation built in.
Newton: Built a B/W life gain aggro, that could morph into an Esper artifacts build
Tea: B/W Control revolving around clones and counters
Drew: Selesnya beatdown aggro style, everything costing under 5cc.
Del: Gruul tokens, built around Purphoros
Cal: Bant superfriends, with soldier and warriors. Focusing around Kiora and Ugin.

Double elimination is a brutal mistress, and the blows flew wildly last night. People were dropping like flies until 2 remained. Kinny at 3-0 and Newton at 3-1. His only loss being at the the hands of Kinny himself. Staring each other down, they entered the match. Newton had to win 2 solid rounds against Kinny to win. eliminate him twice.

Kinny was swiftly beaten in round one. Then they looked at the clock and saw that is was one in the morning. They nodded in agreement and both drew the final match.

So over the next two weeks, I will bring you both my and Newton's Deck techs. And I will interview Newton on why he drafted and built both decks that he made for the draft. So tune in next week, for Newton's own words on why he did what he did, and how he overcame the odds.
