What with Modern Masters coming out next week, you can bet we at Mana that’s Good are excited. In fact, Kinny and I even purchased our box of it weeks in advance (back when it was still around MSRP, in fact). We will go over what was opened in the box when we do get it, so stay tuned for that.
In honor of Modern Masters, we all did our own separate lists of our favorites from the set/cards we want to open most in our packs. Let me start off this MM Friday!
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Wings of Velis Vel just seems like a fun card to play around with. I need that extra damage, so why not make my little 0/1 Kahlni Garden plant token a giant flying thing for a little bit? It just makes me smile. And I would love a Conclave Phalanx to go in the extended portion of my Tiny Leaders deck (which when it is done, I will make a second deck tech about).
Number 10
Out of the three big thing/big thing Eldrazi choices that I have, I’m going to go with Ulamog. Indestructability is just so…. satisfying to me. Quicksilvering this baby into play must be so satisfying, and that’s a feeling that I would love to feel some time in the near future.
Number 9
This is such a cute grumpy widdle baby! I just like the idea of putting this down as early as possible and then making it big as quickly as possible with cheap burn and draw spells. And then it’s an unblockable 6 damage! That’s pretty darn sweet, if you ask me.
Number 8
Here come the buffs! I love a good buff, and this card is in its way a “no” card. You want me to get rid of it? No. It’s here and it’s here to stay. Sorry about that. Oh, and you just gave all of my creatures buffs. Joke’s on you dude!
NUMBER 7
My favorite strategies are creature-heavy ones. Tokens, copies, creature cards… just give me them and give me a LOT of them. And now I learn of a card that benefits from me HAVING a lot of them? Just having them. And whenever I get more, it gets BIGGER? And it’s common. I’ll take five, please.
NUMBER 6
Aah, three words I love to hear in one sentence together. “You have hexproof”. And a possible FREE you have hexproof? That’s a pretty sweet deal, if you ask me. Probably really annoying to play around unless you have a lot of enchantment hate, but hey, it’s fun for me.
Number 5
I may not be much of a blue player but I love blue/green, because it gives me access to the creature heavy strategies I love, as well as some counterspells to keep my creatures on the board. But now you attach a counterspell TO a creature? Well, that’s gold, if you ask me.
Number 4
Hey, remember what I said about loving to counter things one number ago? Well, this guy makes countering stuff even MORE satisfying. “Oh, you lightning bolt me? Well, I counter it and then lightning bolt YOU.” “You found a way to destroy my Leyline? Well I counter that and destroy YOUR Splinter Twin!” Plus the added bonus of it never going to the graveyard and shuffling your library, AND the fact that it has to be blocked by three creatures? Yeah, I want him. A lot.
Number 3
Don’t ask me why, but Hydras are SERIOUSLY one of my favorite creature types in all of Magic: The Gathering. I like the fact that you can, for the most part, customize how big or small they are, they can come out early game if you need a creature FAST, or come out hard and heavy later in the game when you need that thing to end it. And this guy REALLY ends it. Pay 5 or more, get double? I’ll take that. Plus that little one damage burn is just that little maraschino cherry on top of the Hydra sundae.
Number 2
Buffing AND token-generating? Where do I sign up for this one? Seriously. This guy is almost everything I like on a creature, and all it’s missing is life gain. He’ll fit pretty perfectly in my Nath deck, and if we draw two, one is going straight into it. After one goes into the Cube, of course.
Number 1
I Love Mana Dorks. I love them so much. They are just one little creature packed with value to me. They have so much untapped potential. And this lovely lady taps not just for one but for THREE colors? And for ONE MANA? Plus that nifty little Exalted ability that just adds even more playablilty to this card. You are one badass woman, Hierarch. And when four-color commander becomes a thing, you and Rattleclaw will work SO WELL together. SO WELL.
And with that, now all I have to do is wait for our box... I don't wanna wait...
